The Spartz family's well drilling legacy began in 1899 when the Mathais-Spartz family moved from Iowa to the St. Kilian area. By the late 1890s, brothers John and Pete Spartz were digging wells throughout the region, eventually spreading their expertise across Minnesota, South Dakota, and North Dakota.
The business evolved through triumph and tragedy—including a fatal well accident in 1928 that claimed Frank X—but the family's commitment never wavered. Around 1940, they transitioned from horse-powered equipment to their first gas-powered machine, marking a turning point toward modern operations.
Today, Duane, Rod and Tom Spartz continue this family legacy, bringing over 125 years of accumulated knowledge to every project.

What sets Spartz & Sons apart is our history of innovation—from designing our own boring wheels and equipment in the 1960s to being among the first to transition from hand-dug wells to mechanized drilling. We've drilled wells as deep as 720 feet and as far away as North Dakota, but our heart remains in Murray County.
Our family has witnessed and adapted to every major change in the industry—from wood curbing to cement, hand carts to modern machinery, augered wells to rotary drilling. This evolution gives us unique insight into what works and what lasts.
The numbers tell our story: wells still functioning from the early 1900s, over 110 wells drilled in our busiest year, and equipment we built decades ago still running strong today.
